“Reflections”

How do children see the city’s past? How do they envision their future selves in it?

From March 1 to 3, 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture, in collaboration with EXILE ROOM, presents the 2nd cycle of the project Mystery 156 Stories about Elefsina, entitled “Reflections”, and calls for participation to teenagers and young people aged 15 to 20 years old. A film workshop that will urge participants to question how the landscape they grew up in is reflected in their decisions about the future. They will learn how they can tell a story through images and sounds, drawing inspiration from the industries and de-industrialized spaces of Elefsina and the people who work there. They will learn how to combine multi-dimensional images and textures, captured through cameras, along with soundscapes and interviews, to compose their own narrative.

After a brief introduction to film and sound media, the participants will be divided into groups and will collect images and sounds of the city using analogue VHS film cameras and recording devices. The echoes of the abandoned Kronos factory, the salty echoes of the shipyards, the steel clatter of the Steelworks and the hum of the people who go to work every day will dress up a different portrait of Elefsina, in a short film made by the children who grow up in the city. The only dialogue that will be heard in the film will be the conversations between them: What do they dream of becoming when they grow up? How do they see their future in Elefsina?

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO CINEMA: Workshop for Teenagers

In these two day workshops, the kids learn the basics of filmmaking – starting from the essentials of operating a camera, including basic lighting, framing, and camera movement.

Through a series of short exercises, all participants get their hands on the camera and learn to shoot basic portraits of people and landscapes.

During the second day of the workshop, they practise how the camera is used to create the visual language of a story – how a series of images can reveal a narrative using the surrounding environment of the city and the landscape to collectively shoot a short film.

No prior experience of filmmaking is necessary to participate in these workshops. The workshops are always adapted to the skill level of the participants, starting from an introductory perspective.

AESTHETICS & LIGHTING IN CINEMA: Workshop for Students in Corfu

There’s no film without a point of view. Visual style is essential to creativity. Cinematography is key in defining our personal style, which will, in turn, affect the narrative approach. But how does one manage to achieve a specific aesthetic and what are the tools that will get you there?

This workshop approaches creative videography through a series of individual and group exercises and shows various techniques that will help us achieve a more polished look on all future audiovisual work.

The goal of this workshop is:

– To get a better understanding of the role the cinematographer plays in the process
– Learn different techniques of natural and artificial lighting
– Learn how to take full advantage of the different lenses and what they have to offer
– Learn how to run a shoot and how to communicate with the rest of the team

No prior experience of filmmaking is necessary to participate in this workshop. The content will be adapted to the skill level of the participants and all equipment will be provided.

November 2 & 3 2023 at Corfu TechLab, located inside the Public Central Historic Library.
